Stuart Matthewman

Stuart Matthewman is in the rarified air of those few film composers who have also topped the pop charts. Stuart has been a vital force in contemporary music with a cinematic bent since the inception of Sade. The multi-instrumentalist can be heard on sax, guitar, and keyboards on all of Sade’s multi-platinum albums such as Diamond Life, Promise, Stronger Than Pride, Love Deluxe winning two Grammy’s along the way. Additionally, Stuart co-produced and co-wrote tracks with Maxwell on the multi-platinum album Urban Hang Suite, which earned him a Grammy nomination for the song Whenever, Wherever, Whatever.

Born August 18, 1960, in Hull, England, Stuart began his musical journey with a boyhood clarinet. As teenager, Stuart moved to saxophone and began playing guitar in various clubs and new wave bands, exposing him to a mountain of different musical tastes and styles, including membership in an Elvis tribute band. Stuart’s influences have always proven eclectic and moody, from Jr. Walker to Gustav Mahler.

As a film composer, Stuart was noticed out-of-the-gate for his ambient and mood-perfect score for Twin Falls Idaho, The Polish Brothers’ breakout independent film which is a touchstone of its time. Stuart’s creative relationship with the Polish Brothers has now spanned five films including Jackpot, Northfork, The Astronaut Farmer, and most recently Manure which stars Billy Bob Thornton and Tea Leoni to be released later this year. Stuart has shown versatility and a narrative sensitivity throughout the Polish Brothers’ varied films, from the contemplativeness of conjoined twins in Twin Falls to the exuberance to launch your own rocket in The Astronaut Farmer. Stuart has also composed the score for the Nelson George movie Life Support Featuring Queen Latifah.
